It is that time of year again for some rules changes. These will likely not be in effect during your summer ball but you never know till you get there sometimes either, so you better be ready for them.
Allow me to be the first to pass along some new rules to you. You can read the official announcement on the NFHS website, but the meat of the article is available by reading this article, so here goes...
The biggest change will undoubtedly be moving the rebounders back along the free throw lane now requiring that the first spot be left open (that means no one below the blocks). This was tested last year and the number of rebounding fouls was reduced according to Mary Struckhoff (NFHS Basketball Rules guru).
Additional rules changes are below: - - Player wearing an illegal jersey, illegal bottoms or illegal number will cost the head coach a direct technical foul (last year's rule charged this to each player improperly equipped on the team).
- - Committee also clarified Rule 3-5-3 to state "any item that goes around the entire head (elastic strips/bands, pre-wrap, headbands, etc.) shall meet the rule requirements regarding color, maximum size, logo restrictions and team uniformity." The committee also added black and beige to the list of legal colors. So let's all understand this now -- primary color of the uniform OR white OR black OR beige.
Other editorial changes approved by the committee (have to wait for your books for these): - - Rule 3-4 was reorganized to separate the topics by articles and adjust the language to reflect current industry standards/terminology.
- - In Rule 4-27-2, a portion of the first sentence of the "incidental contact" definition will be removed to clarify that a foul should be called when displacement occurs while opponents attempt to secure a loose ball.
- - Rule 4-42-5 will be reorganized into sub-articles for clarity.
- - Rule 10-5 will be reorganized for better understanding and clarity.
And last but certainly not least, the committee also adopted five points of emphasis for the upcoming season. The identified topics include legal uniforms, rough play, time-outs, slapping the backboard and officials' mechanics and signals.
